Singapore, smiling, for the Youth Olympics: A photo essay

  • August 18th, 2010 10:34 pm
August 18, 2010 -- Today, the eyes and smiles of the world are on Singapore as day three of the Youth Olympic Games are played in this Southeast Asian hot spot.
Welcoming 3,600 athletes from 200 countries entered in 24 sports, this multi-cultural nation shows off its best side, beckoning tourism with lots of activities to be enjoyed (shopping, clubbing, dining, and such) in addition to the competitions.
But it's the games that are on mostly show this week.
Gold medal number one went to Yuka Sato of Japan who was first in the women's triathlon Sunday. Meanwhile one of our own also won gold.  Swimmer Kaitlyn Jones from Delaware took first in the 200-meter individual medley for the USA.
Other events in Singapore include three-on-three outdoor basketball, the swimming medley incorporating both males and females racers, fencing matches using mixed teams, and the 2,000 meter steeplechase.
This weekend's opening ceremonies for the Youth Olympics were magnificent (see the photo essay accompanying this article), and the closing ceremonies should match up, too. Meanwhile, take a look at how the games are going thus far in Singapore, land of many smiles on many faces and, this week, in the many games too.
